Run For Freedom June 30
To commemorate the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, the annual Run For Freedom is set for Saturday June 30. The 8K road race and 5K fun run/walk both start 10 am at the Legion in Riverhead St. Mary's Bay.$10 registration, medal for all participants, and reception to follow. Rainy and Cool In Ottawa
Yesterday's rain didn't slow down Dean Alyward who finished the Ottawa Marathon in 2:36:31, NL's fastest male at the event. And our fastest female was Allison Hobeika in a time of 3:06:41.Most Newfoundland participants are listed down the right side of this page under the "Ran Away" heading. The registration deadline the the Mercury Athletics Eastern Marathon and 15K is Tuesday May 29. Mail in your form in advance, or register in person that evening from 6 - 8:30 pm at Toyota Plaza Kenmount Road. Race is Sunday June 10 at 7:15 am.

The St. John's Athletics are hosting the Penney Kia Half Marathon this Sunday May 27. Race starts 8 am near the Quidi Vidi boathouse and registration is Thursday from 6 - 9 pm at Toyota Plaza Kenmount Road.

Ryan Brothers Conquer Vancouver
Michael cut 30 minutes off his previous time for the marathon and is currently training for the Ottawa Marathon on May 27. Denis has caught the marathon bug as well and is training for the rigorous 30 mile Knee Knackering North Shore Trail Run in Vancouver on July 14.

Coaster Features Baggs and Poole
The south coast newspaper Coaster has feature stories on two of our marathoners Wayne Baggs and Tony Poole. Wayne completed Boston last month, his 14th marathon. And Tony is off to Ottawa next week for his marathon debut.

Harbour Front 10K This Sunday
The Harbour Front 10K road race is a go for this Sunday May 20 at 8:30 am. Starting and finishing on Harbour Drive the course takes 1 loop of downtown then heads up Waterford Bridge Road and back Southside Road. Registration is Thursday night from 6 pm - 9 pm at Toyota Plaza Kenmount Road. Reception and awards presentation immediately following the race at the Foran Room in City Hall.

Holly Grant Finishes Forest City Marathon
Congratulations to Holly Grant for her marathon 2nd place age group finish in London Ontario yesterday in a time of 3:43:57.

"Running Away" List Grows
Bill Pomeroy has been conducting a training clinic for half marathon and marathon runners and several of the participants are "running away" to test their mettle. Jane Morgan and Marlene Curran are joining the Ottawa Half Marathon contingent May 27, and Owen Sherwood is doing the Bluenose Half May 20.
As for the marathoners Selina Asgar, Marie Baggs, Steve Butler, John Curran, Eric Meloche, Trina Myles, Alison Jones, Danielle Groves, and Tony Poole are all heading to Ottawa May 27. Kelly Abbott and Rick Goulding are doing Edinburgh Scotland May 27, and Steve Morrissey is doing Mississauga this weekend.

Take Nothing For GRANTED
Grant Handrigan is certainly en route to a spectacular season. He finished 5th overall in a field of 5,850 at the Vancouver Half Marathon on May 6 (1st place age group) with a time of 1:12:05.And the week before he nailed a 12th place overall finish in a field of 8,533 at the Times Colonist 10K with a PB of 32:36.
