MUN Swimming Fundraiser

The Sea-Hawks Swim Team is hosting a fund-raising dinner at Club Etomik on Thursday, October 4th from 7:00 -10:00pm. Tickets cost $20.00 at the door.

Sunday Morning Mountain Bike Ride

The Team Instrumar Sunday Morning Mountain Bike Group Rides start tomorrow. Meet 9:30am at 39 Pippy Place to drive to the ride start location. If you need a drive just show up on your bike.

All levels of bikers are welcome ... routes are decided based on weather conditions and the experience level of participants.

Open Cross Country Race Saturday

There will be an Open Cross Country Race this Saturday September 29 starting 1:45pm by the Torbay Rec Center. Men's distance is 6k and women's is 4.5k. Register up to 15 minutes prior at the race venue.

New Record For O'Grady

In the cross-country series for schools at Torbay last Saturday, Patrick O'Grady shattered the record for the high school 3000 meters by a margin of more than twelve seconds.

The seventeen year-old, who has featured very strongly in the road race series this year, covered the course in 8 minutes 37.1 seconds. The series continues over the next two weekends.

Help is always needed at these events so if you can volunteer contact George Stanoev at athletics@nlaa.ca.

Brockerville Athlete of Week at SFU

Ryan Brockerville earned the Athlete of the Week title at Simon Fraser University for leading his team to victory at the Pinetree Classic.

Corner Brook Runners Hitting TO Too!

Several runners from Corner Brook are doing out-of-Province marathons within the next 2 months. Let's start with Mike Coyne and Paula Didham who are off to Toronto next week for the Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

Tetford Gives It A TRI

Newfoundland's Cory Tetford completed his first Triathlon last week in Halifax, finishing the 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run in 1 hour 23 minutes.

Cory has his eye on an Olympic distance event next summer (maybe even the Ironman 70.3), and will tackle the PEI Half Marathon next month. Pictured is proud father with proud son Wil.

2nd For Brockerville

Ryan Brockerville had an impressive second place finish in the Pinetree Classic cross-country race in Coquitlam, BC Saturday. Brockerville ran a superb time of 25 minutes 14 seconds for
the 8 kilometer undulating course.

The eighteen year-old freshman at Simon Fraser University led his team to a first place finish in the event. Brockerville's next competition will be a cross-country race at Stanford university in California, September 29.

Bob's Half Marathon

The annual fundraiser in aid of the Corner Brook YMCA and Transition House is 10am this Sunday September 23 from the Greenwood Inn. Details available on the Corner Brook Running Club website.

Tely 10 or Ironman 70.3?

In 2008 both the 81st running of the Tely 10 and the 2nd annual Newfoundland Ironman 70.3 are on Sunday July 27. The NL Running Straw Poll is closed but see feedback and results in the COMMENTS section of this post.

Hobeika Marathon Champ

Allison Hobeika was first across the line in Sunday's Nautilus Provincial Marathon covering the 42.2 kilometers in 3:04:21 . First for the men was Bill Pomeroy in 3:09:24 .

Half Marathon winners were Edward Durnford in 1:27:39 and Christiane Martin in 1:37:34. Full results are posted HERE.

Great Start For Brockerville

Marystown native Ryan Brockerville ran his first race for Simon Fraser University in fine style at the Sundodger cross-country race in Seattle, Washington Saturday.

Competing in a field of more than 200 runners from universities from Alaska to Southern California, the eighteen year-old freshman covered the 8 kilometer course in 25 minutes 25 seconds for an outstanding twelfth place finish.

NL Runners Off To Toronto

Again this year many locals will compete in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon on September 30. Among others Peter Gammon and George Butt will do the full 26.2 miles, while Lynette Bradbury will do the 5K.

Marathon & Half Marathon This Sunday

The Nautilus Marathon and Half Marathon is this Sunday September 16 starting 7:30 am at Pearlgate track. Register Thursday from 6-9 pm or Saturday from 1-4 pm at Toyota Plaza Kenmount Road.

If you're not planning to run why not come out and volunteer? 26 miles is a long way and help is needed at some water stops and intersections. Contact glenn@nl.rogers.com if you're available.

Cape To Cabot Sold Out

Cape to Cabot is now sold out. "We hope to expand to perhaps as many as 500 next year" said race director Pete Soucy "but for this first running we planned for 250 and that's all we can accommodate."

The sell-out means there will be NO in-person registration on Thursday October 18. Race kit pickup will take place only at the Running Room from noon to 5 pm Saturday October 20.

If you are available to volunteer please e-mail info@capetocabot.com . Volunteers are eligible for great draw prizes and are invited to the post-race brunch buffet reception.

Stretch For Runners

Margot French of Downward Dog Yoga is offering Stretch For Runners (5:45 pm) and Stretch For Athletes (6:45 pm) classes on Mondays starting September 10.

The Athletes class is designed for swimmers, bikers, skiers ... anyone needing some upper body work.
