Mercury 15K Next Sunday June 7

The Mercury 15k Road Race is next Sunday June 7 starting 8:15am. Note that the start and finish line has be relocated to Old Broad Cove Road between Tolt Road and Bennett's Road. Click the map for a better look at the course.

Register Thursday June 4 at Toyota Plaza Kenmount Road from 6-8:30pm. Race morning registration available at Beachy Cove Elementary from 7:15-8am.

Hammond & Mowat Forces To Reckon With

Denita Hammond and Allison Mowat (nee Alexander) were first and second in the open women's 5k division at Canadian Forces Running Nationals in Ottawa last weekend.

Naval Officer Hammond is currently posted to CFB Esquimalt and Army Officer Mowat is posted to CFB Gagetown.

Both are members of the Canadian Forces CISM running team which competes worldwide against other military teams and are training to qualify for CISM World Cross Country which will be held in Belgium next February.

Province-Wide Triathlon Series Announced

The Capital Subaru NL Triathlon Series was announced today. This year the series features 3 events including the Carbonear Sprint on July 19, the Corner Brook Triathlon on August 2, and the 25th Anniversary St.John's Triathlon on August 9.

Future plans include the addition of more races as well as the introduction of a series points competition to crown a Tri King and Queen in Newfoundland & Labrador. Read the press release HERE.

Garnish 10K This Saturday May 30

The CHCM Garnish Timex 10K road race is this Saturday starting noon. Register Thursday from 6:30-8:30pm at the Marystown Summer Games Building or race day from 10-11:30am at the Garnish Rec Center.

Angelopoulos Wins Not So Hilly Half

John Angelopoulos ran Sunday's Not So Hilly Half Marathon in a time of 1:21:10 to capture first place in a field of 166 finishers.

First in the ladies was Allison Jones in 1:33:48.

Brockerville 6th In Illinois

Ryan Brockerville ended his 2009 university outdoor track season this weekend with an excellent sixth place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the NAIA championships in Edwardsville, Illinois. His time on a hot, humid afternoon was nine minutes 12.24 seconds.

The 20 year-old distance runner returned home immediately after the event and will spend the summer preparing for the Canada Summer Games this August.

Meanwhile last weekend in her first major international race of the season, Julia Howard finished fourth in the 800 meters at an IAAF World Athletics Tour event in Ponce, Puerto Rico. In a very tight race, Howard recorded a time of 2 minutes 5.23 seconds, less than seven tenths of a second behind the winner from Trinidad and Tobago.

Race To The Sea August 7 & 8

The 7th Annual Lighthouse Relay, Race to the Sea is scheduled for August 7th & 8th. The Race to the Sea consists of a 120 km relay along the scenic and rugged southwest coast of Newfoundland.

Outlook Subscription Trouble

If you subscribe to email updates from nlrunning.com and use Outlook for your email, you may notice a problem when receiving your email update (usually around 1:30pm NST daily).

When the message loads it may hang for a few seconds and present a dialogue box stating that "blogger ... is being contacted for content" or something like that. After a few seconds the message will load but the hangup could recur when Outlook refreshes.

We apologize for this problem and are searching for a solution ... please bear with us ... Microsoft and Google don't always get along! Thanks subscriber Keith for pointing out the trouble.

Butt Biking Home

To cap off a winter and spring of motor home travel around North America, NL Runner Don Butt decided to tackle a longtime goal and bike across Newfoundland.

With wife Barb and motor home supporting him along the way, Don is knocking off anywhere from 40-60 miles a day, and finishing each day with a 3-5 mile run. Could be a personal best Tely 10 this year!

Not So Hilly Half This Sunday - Volunteers Needed

The Not So Hilly Half Marathon is this Sunday May 24 and note the new start time of 7:30am.

Race is sold out and please note also that registrations are non-transferable and non-refundable. Please respect this as it creates tremendous grief for event organizers.

If you're not running drop by the Running Room Churchill Square Thursday May 21 at 7:30pm for a brief volunteer meeting to see how you can help out.

Bluenose Marathon Finishers

At least 9 NL Runners completed the Bluenose Marathon over the weekend including Mack Hatfield (3.22.02), Peter Thompson (3.41.00), Donna Power (3.49.06), Jamie Snook (3.54.24), Marie Baggs (4.01.44), Fiona Curtis (4.01.50), Jennifer McCreath (4.08.33), Michelle Porter (4.22.00), and Janet Noftall (4.50.00).

Holly's Going To Boston!

Congratulations to Holly Grant on her Boston qualifier yesterday in Cleveland Ohio. She ran the Cleveland Marathon in 3:35:50 finishing 10th in her age group.

Dean Simon also had a great race running 3:38:20 and setting a new personal best time by 7 minutes.

Harbour Front Southside 10K Results

Sunshine, 15 degrees, no wind, and lots of hills. That's what faced 145 runners this morning at the Nautilus Harbour Front Southside 10K Road Race.

Pictured is Peter Bazeley as he captured first place in 35 minutes 48 seconds. He was followed by Edward Durnford in 36:42 and Liam Delaney in 37:19.

First for the ladies was Kate Vaughan in 37 minutes 37 seconds. Lise Petrie was second in 42:18 while Christiane Martin took third place in 43:56.

Ryans Run Fredericton

Kevin & Cynthia Ryan ran the Fredericton Marathon last Sunday in a time of 4:17:38 for both.

Cynthia's time placed her 5th in her age division.

East & West Coast Races This Weekend

Whatever side of the Island you're on there's a race for you this weekend.

In St.John's the Nautilus Harbour Front Southside 10K is 8am Sunday morning with early registration 6-8:30pm tonight at Toyota Plaza Kenmount Road.

And in Corner Brook the Take The Plunge Spring Opener 5K starts 10am at Tippings Pond with race morning registration beginning at 9am.

TRI Paradise Sprint Triathlon

The 1st Annual TRI Paradise Sprint Triathlon is set to go on Sunday June 28.

Ryan Continues Endurance Challenge

On Saturday Michael Ryan from Marystown completed his 4th trail ultra of the season and his first 50 miler at the Northface Endurance Challange at Bear Mountain NY in 13 hours and 14 minutes.

Harbour Front 10K Parking & Late Registration

In the spirit of continuous improvement a new race morning venue has been secured for this Sunday's Harbour Front Southside 10K. Race start time is 8am.

Parking, race morning late registration, and post race reception will be at Beaconsfield Junior High 210 Waterford Bridge Road. Click the image for an updated map.

Mississauga Results

At least 3 NL Runners were in Ontario yesterday for the Mississauga Marathon. Anthony Broders ran 3:28:54 while Jennifer McCreath ran 4:08:53. Jennifer will be in Halifax next week for the Bluenose Marathon making it 5 marathons in 30 days!

Terry Clarke who now lives in Brampton, ran the half in 1:29:25 in preparation for his return home for this summer's Tely 10.

Harbour Front 10K Course Adjustment

There has been a slight change to the route for next Sunday's Harbour Front Southside 10K.

The start AND finish line is now located just west of Waterford Lane on Southside Road. Course is out and back running east 5k to the Small Boat Basin where runners turn for the return 5k.

Stratton, Ryan Among Finishers In Vancouver

At least 2 NL Runners completed last week's Vancouver Marathon. Denis Ryan from Marystown finished with a PB time of 3:09:09. He was 93rd overall and 12th in the 25-29 age group.

Shawn Stratton managed a time of 3:20:15 in his first crack at 26.2 miles as part of his training for Ironman Canada in August. Shawn is also one of the speakers at this Saturday's Get Inspired 2009 day of inspiration at Holy Heart of Mary.

Harbour Front 10K Sunday May 17

The Harbour Front 10K is relocated again this year to the Southside Road due to continued construction downtown. Race starts 8am Sunday May 17 in front of HMCS Cabot but note the BUILDING WILL NOT BE OPEN so there will be no washroom facilities available near the start line. just west of Waterford Lane on Southside Road.

Race morning registration and washrooms will be available at St.Mary's School from 6:45-7:30am but note this is over 3 kilometers about 800 meters from the start / finish line. so of course THURSDAY NIGHT REGISTRATION IS ENCOURAGED.

Don Butt from Carbonear ran the 2nd Annual Patriot's Run in Roanoke Rapids, NC last weekend posting a 5k time of 27:17.

Don and better half Barb are working their way back home after a winter of motor-homing, cycling, swimming and running throughout the southern States.

Provincial Record For Brockerville

Ryan Brockerville continued his outstanding season on Saturday by breaking a 27 year old provincial track record at the Payton Jordan Invitational Track and Field Meet at Stanford University, California.

The Marystown native became the first Newfoundland runner to break 9 minutes for the 3000 meter steeplechase in returning a time of 8 minutes 58.37 seconds, taking more than three seconds off the senior record set by Jeff Collingwood in 1982.

Also competing in Stanford was Julia Howard from St.John's who ran 4 minutes 12.83 seconds to finish 7th in the 1500 meter.

Burton's Pond Pictures

Runners at this morning's Burton's Pond 5K enjoyed cool temperatures, light drizzle and no wind. Patrick O'Grady grabbed first place in 15:43 while Caroline McIlroy was first for the ladies in 17:20. Full results to follow.
