National Cross Country Results

An outstanding sixth place finish was the highlight for Newfoundland and Labrador runners at the National Cross Country Championships in Guelph, Ontario on Saturday.

Kate Vaughan completed the 7k course in 24 minutes 27.7 seconds. Her placing puts her in a strong position for selection to the World Championships in 2011.

Other local finishes included a 46th place in the 8k Junior Men's race by Liam Delaney. In the 10k Senior Mens division Ryan Brockerville was 46th, Grant Handrigan was 62nd and Adam Snow finished 83rd.

  1. Kate Vaughan may very well end up being the best runner NL ever produces.

Kate is an outstanding runner but anonymous might want to change his/her post to read best "FEMALE" runner NL ever produces. I’m pretty confident that Paul McCloy is NL’s best ever runner and none of our current runners from 20-39 years of age are going to change that now.

  4. Both of you should check it at the door and keep it positive. Kate is just getting started and is one of the most talented runners this province has ever seen and is olympic material if she wishes to go in that direction. She has 10-15 years of running ahead of her yet. McCloy is one of the greatest Canadian runners of all time and every competitive runner should set their sights on his achievements as something to aim for. When Kate finishes her running career then do the comparisons, but for now give each of them the respect they deserve and keep them in separate categories. Kate is in the process of building her running resume whereas Paul has built a LONG resume.

  5. There's a big difference between estrogen and testosterone. (if anyone can speak that, it's me!) let's not compare apples and oranges.

Anyway, let's take a quick look at Kate's 2010 NLAA Road Racing season: 9 events; 9 victories, with an insanely high margin of victory; she became the 2nd fastest female in tely history (Nicola Will). Oh, and she's only 26 and just starting to reach her running prime!

Ok, now let's compare apples and oranges against all other oranges: Kate had 9 top 9 overall placements out of her 9 races; 6 of which were top 5 overall placements. Out of all 9 of those races, only 1 other female cracked the top 9 overall, once (Carolyn McIlroy).

Paul has won 5 Tely Tens, holds 4 of the 5 fastest Tely runs in history, and qualified for the Olympics in the 10000 metre division. That is definitely an awesome resume!

Kate's consistency, her average margin of victory, her standard deviation from the field, combined with her work ethic and dedication to the sport, makes her a stand out talent who clearly DOES have the potential to equal Paul's resume, if that is what she desires to do.

  7. Hey Adam,

You ran well yourself! 37 mins on that day is a fine time. Very glad to see you doing some solid running again.
