Outfitters Trail Run Wednesday

This week's Outfitters trail run will start at the access point to the Freshwater Bay Trail on Blackhead Road. The run will be a little longer than usual winding over 11k to Cape Spear where transportation will be provided back to the start.

Run is Wednesday September 1 and due to the shorter evening and longer distance, will start at 6pm.

Provincial 5K Downtown Route Sought

The Provincial 5K road race is set for Sunday September 12 at 8am and organizers are hoping for approval to move the course back downtown.

The requested route is the one used in 2007 ... out-and-back along Water Street from Temperance to Patrick Street return. Alternate is the traditional 2 loops of Mundy Pond.

Yoga For Athletes

Akhilayoga is offering a class designed for athletes who are looking to balance their training program. It will focus on stretching and strengthening the muscles, improving breathing technique as well as posture and balance. Another key aspect of this class is to target areas where common injuries occur to help with prevention. If there is an existing injury the student will be shown ways to safely approach it and work through the healing process.

First class is Saturday September 11 from 9-10:15am at the Paradise Physiotherapy 1386 Topsail Road. Cost is $84 for 6 sessions. For registration or more information contact Eric at info@akhilayoga.com or call 709.728.0078.

Running In Paradise

If you're interested in some regular running in the Paradise area consider joining the Paradise Running Club. There are scheduled runs throughout the week as well as a Sunday morning group run 7:30am from the Community Center.

Bell Island Blast Results

Congratulations to David Freake and Holly Grant for their victories at Sunday's Bell Island Blast.

68 runners finished the 10-mile jaunt around the island with David winning in 1:00:04 while Holly crossed the line in 1:12:08.

Robbins To Conquer The Coast

Endurance athlete Gary Robbins is in town and starting 4am Friday he will tackle running 220 kilometers of the East Coast Trail in under 48 hours.

Gary is originally from Mount Pearl but now calls Vancouver home. His running endeavors are focused on raising awareness and funds for Right To Play.

Bell Island Blast Sunday

The Bell Island Blast 10 mile road race is this Sunday August 22 starting 10:30am.

Participants, volunteers and spectators should make the 8:20am ferry from Portugal Cove their first choice, with the 9:20am ferry a last resort.

Registration is available ONLINE ONLY until midnight Friday (no in-person registration) and race kit pickup is Saturday from 10am-1pm at Mazda on Kenmount Road.

Nautilus Ekiden

When the folks at Nautilus added a team relay to this year's Provincial Marathon, they didn't know they were embracing Japanese running culture! But Ray Will was quick to point out that the ekiden is HUGE in Japan and is growing in popularity in many other countries.

NL Runner Leo Power is among a group of Keg franchisees currently climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. Accompanied by The Keg owner David Aisenstat, the group is raising funds for The Keg Spirit Foundation.

Death Race For Ryan Brothers

Brothers Michael and Denis Ryan from Marystown ran the recent Canadian Death Race, a 125 km course in the Canadian Rockies beginning and ending on a 4,200 foot plateau and including 17,000 feet of elevation change and a major river crossing.

Denis finished the race in 18 hours 34 minutes for 26th place overall out of 418 starters. Michael put in a valiant effort but unfortunately suffered from dehydration and stomach sickness and had to drop out after 95 km after failing to meet a stage cut-off time.

Michael King ran 16:42 for first place in this morning's Quidi Vidi 5K road race. First for the ladies was Susan Martyn in 20:20.

Forsey Performs At Legion Championships

Jillian Forsey performed very well at the Legion Canadian Youth Track Championships last weekend. In the Under 16 division she placed 3rd in the 1200m (3:40), 4th in the 2000m (6:27), and 6th in the 800m (2:20).

Record 214 Participate In St.John's Tri

Yesterday's St.John's Triathlon saw a record number of 214 participants swim, bike and run in ideal conditions with sunshine, no humidity, and temperatures in the mid to high 20's. A breezy wind cooled everyone down a little but also resulted in some slower than usual bike splits.

Congratulations to overall standard distance winners Stephen Dyke (2:08:03) and Caroline McIlroy (2:25:22) and to our trooper Jennifer Mersereau who finished her first ever standard distance triathlon in 5 hours 32 minutes.

The sprint distance titles were taken by Jordan Baird (1:07:07) and Alexandra Lys (1:20:38).

For the team events Mark Dillon & Alison Walsh captured first place standard distance in 2:28:52 while first place sprint distance went to Carl, Fiona & Bruce Sheppard in 1:17:25.

Blackwood Does Tinman Tri Hawaii

George Blackwood, a very active participant in our running community, is getting great milage from his cross training and recently completed the Tinman Triathlon in Hawaii!

George's time for the 750m swim, 40k bike and 10k run was 2 hours 32 minutes.
