Why not have the marathon on Witless Bay Line or a similar road? Witless Bay Line is 21K across. Could go over for the 1/2 and back again for the full. I can't imagine that there would be much cost if any for marshalls/security.

I am also among those training for this event and am mightily sorry to hear that it has been cancelled.

Would it be possible to share some details with us folks? I'm sure that there's something at play here with regards to municipal regulations and requirements that are jacking up the costs to run the event. Could you fill us in on what's going on so that we at least know who to pretend we're stomping on as we do hill work?

This explanation is not good enough. I realize the race is run by volunteers but I have volunteered with a number of organizations and you don't pull the plug unless there is a drastic unforseen circumstance. Were these costs not known previously or does the club just not have enough volunteers and are throwing in the towel. If it is costs then why don't you at least set a deadline for say July 31 and if a certain number of runners are not registered then cancel. Pulling the plug now with no consultation doesn't add up.

I too would like to know what those exorbitant marshalling costs amount to. How many $$$ are we talking about? How many marshals? Are all of those marshals trained in traffic control? Could not volunteer marshals be substituted in less critical areas or is there some city/race policy stating only registered security firms can be used?
Many of us have been training hard for this event and to cancel it so abruptly shows little regard for the running community. There may be other options that can and should be considered.

Can someone explain why it cost so much for security? As others have said, cut out everything else but the race. Few care about shirts or post race festivites. I have been specifically training since May for my first half and I know of many including a Running Room Clinic training specifically for this race. Let's reconsider.

This is so disappointing. :( This is my first year seriously training to run and after the Tely 10 I had hoped to train for the half marathon. I am not sure how much registration was supposed to cost for this event but I was planning on doing it regardless.

Please reconsider. There are people training for both of these and we are all sad to hear that it's cancelled.

If the cost of security and marshalling has increased - do what any other business would do that has to deal with an increased labour cost - let the customer absorb the cost.

The way I see it, if I need to travel to Toronto or Goose Bay to run a marathon - it is going to cost me an awful lot more to get my Boston qualifying time! I would be more than willing to pay an extra $5 and $10 to register.

Have the organizers thought of other ways to cut costs - eliminate the shirts, dial down the commemorative medals, cancel the BBQ - or even better, have you explored getting more sponsors?

It seems like an extreme step to cancel the only marathon on the island! I wish the organizers would reconsider.

For people planning to travel to the Destination Labrador Trapline Marathon from Atlantic Canada; Air Canada is currently offering some great flight passes. They are available for purchase until August 1, 2009 and valid for travel between June 7 and October 17, 2009. The cost is $820 for four (4) credits, for two (2) people! It's a great deal!
