Run For Freedom June 28

Commemorating the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, the 2008 Run For Freedom is Saturday June 28 in Riverhead, St.Mary's Bay.

Registration opens 8:30am at the Father Val Power Complex and race starts 10am. Chose from a competitive 8k or recreational 5k. $10 for adults and $5 for under 18.

Olympic Design Run For Canada Shirts

Anyone who took part last year knows that the Run For Canada shirts were of excellent quality and quite attractive.

Well this year the bar is raised another notch with a snazzy Olympic design on both the participant and the volunteer shirts. Click the picture for a better view.

Time Trials Well Under Way

Again this year Team Instrumar with the support of BNL presents an Individual Time Trial (ITT) series including some Hill Climbs. There is an event almost every week and the schedule will soon be posted HERE.

This week's Hill Climb up Shea Heights saw seasoned riders Zack Garland (9:09) and Will Fitzgerald (10:13) capture 1st and 2nd place respectively.

And just seconds behind for 3rd place was up-and-coming Philip McIlroy (10:44). Philip is pictured on the right at last year's St.John's Triathlon.

Two Races This Weekend

Reminder that the Garnish 10K is Saturday. Register at the Garnish Rec Center from 10:30am ... race starts noon.

And the new Not So Hilly Half Marathon is Sunday. Register at the Running Room Churchill Square up to 4pm Saturday ... race starts Sunday morning 7:30am near the Reid Center in Mount Pearl.

The 3rd Annual Oliver's Pond Sprint Triathlon is being planned for Saturday June 28.

Bike Talk On CBC Radio Today

Tune in to CBC Radio today 1:30-2:30pm for Crosstalk on cycling.

Leon Organ and Kelly Hawboldt from BNL will be discussing the City of St. John’s Cycling Master Plan, rumble strips on the highway, utilitarian cycling, cycling in rural communities and the Canada Summer Games among other cycling topics.

Pre-Race Seminar June 6

Mercury Athletics, organizers of the Eastern Marathon and 15K, are offering a pre-race seminar on Friday June 6 from 6-8pm at the Pearlgate Track and Field Complex.

Dr. Fabien Basset will speak on fitness testing, Holly Grant will present "Nutrition On The Run", and Dr. Janice Drover will discuss the services of Core Insight Chiropractic.

Garland Makes National Team

Local cyclist Zack Garland has been selected for Canada's "A" Team at the upcoming U23 Nation Cup.

Zack was also named this week as the recipient of a $5000 Team Gushue Athletic Scholarship.

26.2 Hot Miles In San Pedro

Tim Turner battled temperatures hitting 34 degrees Celsius last Saturday finishing the San Pedro California Palos Verdes Marathon in 4:17:47.

Ironman Florida 70.3 Finishers

Congratulations to the handful of NL Runners in Florida last weekend for the Ironman Florida 70.3 which included a 1.9k swim, 90k bike and 21.1k run.

Andreas Doerig (6:2631), Joe Kearsey (7:11:40) and Ginny Doerig (7:37:09) all finished the event, while Jeff Glynn had to pull out after the bike leg due to a recurring hip injury.

Ian Ash Remembered At Harbour Front

Will Fitzgerald was first across the line at this morning's Harbour Front 10K in 34minutes and change. First among the ladies was Kate Vaughan in just under 40 minutes. Results are posted HERE.

The race started with a moment of silence to remember Ian Ash. Following his tragic loss of life Friday, Ian is resting at Barrett's Funeral Home Hamilton Avenue with visitation Sunday and Monday 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Funeral from St.Michael's Church Tuesday 11am.

Tragic Loss

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of NL Runner and ANE member Ian Ash. Ian collapsed and died while out running with a group of his friends last night.

Ian is well known for his wealth of knowledge and dedication to our sport, and in particular for setting up the finish line and clock at all NLAA races.

Our condolences to wife Christine, family and friends.

Harbour Front 10k Map

The start line and finish line for Sunday's Harbour Front 10k are staggered to get an accurate 10 kilometer distance.

The original map did not show this detail but above you can see that the course starts on the crest of the hill by HMCS Cabot Southside Road, proceeds west to turn at 4.5k just before the Corpus Christi intersection, and finishes at the boat basin near Fort Amherst.

Run For Canada Participants & Volunteers

The Hbc Run For Canada July 1 in Bowring Park offers something for everyone ... 10k road race (certified and sanctioned with great prizes in all age groups), 3k walk along the Waterford River trails, and the 1k kids run is the highlight of the day!

This year's finishers medals are Olympic replicas from the Canadian Mint, and the technical running shirts are in the new colorful Olympic design.

If you're not planning to run or walk, 85 volunteers are needed for various jobs throughout the morning. Pancakes and shirts for everyone! Click HERE to sign up as a volunteer.

Commander Gander Races August 3

The Commander Gander road races are officially scheduled for Aug 3rd. Due to the Great Big Anniversary Concert on the 2nd, runners from out of town are reminded to book in early for hotel space. Some hotels are already filled.

Eastern Marathon and 15K

The second annual Eastern Marathon and 15K is running on Sunday June 8 starting 7:15am by the Sunshine Camp on Bennett's Road. More information including course details and registration options can be found on the NLAA site HERE.

Cold Day For An Ultra

In spite of the cold and rain the Newfoundland leg of the Canada OneXOne Ultra is underway.

Ray Zahab left from Cape Spear 5am this morning and was joined by NL Runner Jennifer McCreath among others.

13 Ultras In 13 Days

As a fundraiser for children's charities Ray Zahab will cross Canada running 80k a day for 13 days.

The Newfoundland leg of his journey is this Wednesday May 14 starting 5am at Cape Spear and includes a stop at Coffee and Company 204 Water Street at 8am, and a visit with the Premier. See the full day's itinerary HERE.

NL Runners are encouraged to join Ray for any or all parts of the run.

Harbour Front 10K This Weekend

The Harbour Front 10K road race is this Sunday May 18 starting 8am. Due to construction on Harbour Drive the course is moving to Southside Road for this year.

Register at Toyota Plaza this Thursday from 6-9pm.

Brockerville Heading Home

Ryan Brockerville of Marystown ended his first year at Simon Fraser University in fine style at the Ken Shannon Invitational Track Meet in Seattle, Washington.

The early season performances of the eighteen year-old have included a provincial junior record in the 3000 metre steeplechase and an outstanding time in the 800 metres. He again demonstrated his superb form this weekend at the University of Washington track with a fine personal best of 4 minutes 4.26 seconds in the 1500 metres for an eleventh place finish.

Brockerville will return to Newfoundland for the summer break this week.

Handrigan 14th At Times Colonist 10K

In a field of almost 11,000 runners Grant Handrigan finished 14th overall at the Victoria Times Colonist 10K April 27, 17 seconds faster than his 2007 performance.

Tely 10 Training Programs

Joe Ryan will once again be offering two 10-week training programs for the Tely 10. The Beginners program starts Tuesday May 20 and the Intermediate/Advanced course begins Thursday May 22. Training will include a weekly classroom session and two group runs.

Steeplechase Record For Brockerville

Ryan Brockerville recently broke the provincial junior steeplechase record that has stood for 27 years. On the weekend of April 17-18 Ryan competed in a track and field meet in Walnut, California and placed 8th in a time of 9:11:48 for a personal best by 19 seconds.

The provincial record of 9:24:32 held by Jeff Collingwood was set back in 1981 at the Canada Summer Games in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Monday Night Group Rides Started

Time to grease the chain and pump up the tires ... the Monday Night Bike Rides have started!

Meet at the Sunshine Camp Bennett's Road parking lot for a 6:30pm start. Rides are 20-30 kilometers (1-2 hours) and are a great way for beginners to get used to the road.

Helmets and BNL membership mandatory.

Doug Shea will be running the Ottawa Marathon May 25th while Betty Shea will run the Half.

And Jennifer McCreath will be in Ontario this weekend running the Canon Mississauga Marathon.
