Teck Centennial Cup Grand Falls-Windsor

The Exploits RoadRunners present the Teck Centennial Cup 2012 in Grand Falls-Windsor Sunday June 17 starting 9am.

This race has been running annually since 2005 and offers distances of 5K or 10K.

Kate Bazeley Canadian Half Marathon Champ!

Hats off to Kate Bazeley who secured the title of Canadian Half Marathon Champion Sunday morning in Montreal! Kate won the race in 1 hour 16 minutes 34 seconds.

Some other NL Runners taking part were Rudy Riedlsperger (1:20:09), Alison Walsh (1:26:11) and Mark Dillon (1:31:52).

Butt First Place Age Group In Tallahassee

Don Butt ran Saturday's Tallahassee Red Shoe 10K in 56:02 for 1st place in the 60+ age group.

Don, enjoying some time down south with plenty of running, noted "another shirt and another reason to celebrate!"

Spring Into Spring This Sunday

New World Running Club is hosting their Spring Into Spring Fun Run this Sunday April 29 starting 10:30am at the Bowring Park West Entrance.

Pacers Duathlon Early Bird Registration

Although the ponds are starting to warm up, you won't have to swim to take part in the first Triathlon NL event of the season!

The Pacers Duathlon is just over a month away set for Sunday June 3 in Goulds. Register by next Tuesday May 1 for an early bird discount.

Atlantic Muscle recently featured an article on Julia Howard Kawamoto and her quest to run 1500 meters in 4 minutes 6 seconds as she takes her shot at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Freake 33rd In Yonge Street 10K

David Freake ran 32:47 to finish 3rd in his age group at Sunday's Yonge Street 10k in Toronto. David's personal best performance landed him 33rd place overall in a field of more than 5000 runners.

Mundy Pond 5K Winners

177 runners enjoyed a beautiful summer morning with a warm westerly breeze at Sunday's Mundy Pond 5K.

Colin Fewer secured 1st place in 15 minutes 15 seconds followed by Adam Snow (16:07) and Matt Noseworthy (16:08). 1st place for the ladies was Caroline McIlroy (18:26) then Janelle Simmons (18:53) and Carine Kerhoas (19:00).

Online registration for this Sunday's Mundy Pond 5K closes Thursday night 11:59pm so if you haven't yet done so SIGN UP NOW.

While there will be an opportunity to register on race morning, a $10 late registration fee will apply.

Harbour Front 10K Mother's Day

Registration is now open for the Harbour Front 10K set for Mother's Day May 13 starting 8am.

Course starts and finishes as usual on Harbour Drive with a loop of Water Street and a scenic jaunt up and down the Waterford Valley.

Online registration is HERE and bib pickup is race morning from 7-7:30am at the City Hall Foran Room. There will be a short reception in the Foran Room immediately following the race.

Tely 10 Practice Run Tomorrow

Tomorrow is Good Friday and as per tradition the Tely 10 route will be swarming with runners. See our PREVIOUS POST for the background and note that while start times vary for many, the largest group will leave from McNamara Road at 9am.

Note this is NOT an official, organized, supported or sanctioned event so if you do partake stay on the sidewalks and be careful out there! Everyone runs at their own risk and don't expect any marshals, traffic control or assistance of any kind. Find a few friends and carpool from the finish to the start.

Not So Hilly Half Registration Open

Athletics NorthEast announces that registration is now open for the MAX Not So Hilly Half Marathon on Sunday May 27. Included with your race registration is a free 1-month membership to the MAX strength and conditioning centers (New Cove Road, Aberdeen Avenue and Olympic Drive).

This race always sells out so avoid disappointment and sign up today!

  • MAX membership must be redeemed by June 1, 2012
  • Due to the fact that the course is an open course (ie. traffic will be on the road during the race) there is a complete ban on headphones / earbuds

Headphone Survey Results

We recently surveyed the NL Running community for opinions on the enforcement of the "No Headphones" rule in road races. There were 192 votes and here's what you had to say:
  • 49% said "NO! I want my tunes!" 
  • 32% said "YES! Those zoned-out runners are a hazard to themselves and me!"
  • 10% said "I DON'T CARE. PERIOD." 
  • 7% said "I DON'T CARE. But have the same level of enforcement at ALL races."
There are also some 46 comments to date which you can read and/or add to on our previous post "The Headphone Wrangle".

Howard-Kawamoto Wins 1500 In Arizona

On Saturday March 24, Julia Howard-Kawamoto returned to racing by winning the Women's 1500m at the ASU Invitational Track Meet in Tempe, Arizona with a time of 4:21.08. Full results of the meet can be found HERE.

Brockerville Breaks His Own Record

The following excerpt from a Simon Fraser University press release ...
"Ryan Brockerville won the 3000-metre steeplechase competition for the third year in a row as the Simon Fraser University track and field team opened their outdoor season at the Ralph Vernacchia Open, hosted by Western Washington University. 
Brockerville broke his own record in the event, finishing in 9:03.95. His performance earned him an automatic qualifier into the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship Meet."

Flat Out Results

It was a winter day for sure with snow-covered roads and sub-zero temperatures, but 169 finishers crossed the line in the season-opener Flat Out 5K on Sunday.

David Freake was the winner in 16:45 with Caroline McIlroy capturing first place for the ladies in 18:24. Full results are available HERE.
