The Headphone Wrangle

The wearing of headphones while running can certainly be dangerous to you and those around you, impairing your ability to hear traffic, warnings from race marshals, or that barking dog (or worse) on your heels about to bite you (or worse)!

Yet for many there is something appealing about zoning out and having 4000 of their favorite tunes available to them as they beat the pavement or the trails, particularly in a race. Perhaps the music pumps the adrenalin, improves focus, or distracts from the pain!

The official rule of most governing bodies including the NLAA is that the wearing of headphones is NOT permitted in races. But enforcement is up to race organizers, and the extent of enforcement varies greatly from race to race. Some will not allow you on the course, others will quietly disqualify you, but most will turn a blind eye instead focusing on the dozens of other race management priorities and issues facing them.

Do Race Directors crack down on the headphone rule to improve the safety of participants, or do they ease off and accept the age-old marketing parable ... "the customer is always right"?

Tely 10 Practice Good Friday

If you haven't run the Tely 10 route on Good Friday you are missing out on a HUGE group run! On Friday April 6 runners will converge on McNamara Drive in Paradise for the traditional 10-mile trek to Bannerman Park. While individuals and groups have their own starting times, the largest pack hits the start line at 9am.

This tradition started many years ago when Phil Gushue, Paul Dawe and a few other friends chose the day to test their mettle on the Tely 10 route, and capped off the run with fish and chips! Year after year more and more people joined in and the past few years have seen hundreds taking part.

Note this is NOT an official, organized, supported or sanctioned event so if you do partake stay on the sidewalks and be careful out there! Everyone runs at their own risk and don't expect any marshals, traffic control or assistance of any kind. Find a few friends and carpool from the finish to the start.

Miquelon 25K June 23

The annual Miquelon 25K is now confirmed for Saturday June 23. Their website is in French however here is a rough translation (Thanks Google!) of some info:

"The 25 km Miquelon 'is as its name suggests, a race event at the feet of 25 kilometers. Like any test running, it is subject to the conditions of registration as follows:
Two types of entries are possible, namely the competition mode and the mode leisure .
The competition mode is offered to participants who wish to be classified, in time. These participants will compete with a bib and time will be recorded to determine the classification of the race.

The way leisure is, himself, offered to participants who wish to do for fun, running, walking or cycling, although not necessarily a ranking or a time. These participants will receive a bib blocked and will not be registered for the classification.
Participants in competition mode will necessarily provide a medical certificate to the foot race in competition and a discharge. Participants in leisure mode shall not be subject to medical certificate, but will still provide a discharge.
The minimum age to participate in the requested 25 km of Miquelon is 16 years. For participants with less than 18 years on race day, permission of parents or legal guardian is required.
The registration fee, which includes participation in the race, the reward, access to the barbecue, at meals and various musical entertainment planned for the evening is set at 35 euros. The organization and cost of transportation of Langlade or Miquelon remains the responsibility of participants."
This is an exceptional event although transportation to and from the island can get tangly and arrangements change from year to year. Best to inquire with the organizers to confirm logistics and get yourself booked on the ferry out of Fortune. Once you get there you'll be treated like kings and queens so if you're up for an adventure put this one in your calendar!
