D'Arcy Hart Passed Away

We regret to announce that long-time NL Runner and ANE member D'Arcy Hart passed away last week:
HART, D'Arcy - It is with great sadness and heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of D'Arcy Joseph Hart on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, in St. John's, NL. He was born on September 27, 1957 in Toronto, ON to Catherine (Shaughnessy) Hart and the late William Hart. Dearly loved husband of Lucy and devoted father of Kathleen and Shannon. Beloved brother of Michael (Kathie), Terry (Sue), Molly (Owen), Maureen (John) and Eileen. D'Arcy will be missed by his nieces, nephews and many friends. As a physicist, D'Arcy worked on collaborative projects for the International Space Station. He did not like to talk too much about his work but it often took him to the Von Braun Space Center in Alabama, the Johnson Space Center in Texas and Cape Canaveral, FL where he witnessed the launch of some of his work in the space shuttle. D'Arcy was a dedicated runner throughout his life, participating in numerous marathons, including the Boston Marathon. He continued to referee basketball and loved challenging hikes. He was always good for book suggestions if they involved mystery, horror or sci-fi.
Funeral service was earlier this week in Toronto. Thanks to Paul Lahey for the photo.

Provincial 5K September 7 CANCELLED

Due to the scheduled arrival of a large cruise ship and the anticipated high traffic volume in the downtown area, the September 7 Provincial 5K road race has been cancelled. Road closure is critical for this race and the inability to close Water Street, combined with the increased traffic levels would create an unsafe environment for runners.

For anyone hoping to get a 5k race under their belt in early September take note that the Paradise Five & Dime is set for the following weekend on Saturday September 13, a Timex race on a certified course.

Paradise Figure 8 8K This Saturday

The Paradise Figure 8 8K is this Saturday August 9 and registration closes Thursday evening so don't delay ... REGISTER NOW.

Cape To Cabot Registration Delayed Opening

Technical issues have forced a delay in the opening of registration for the Cape To Cabot. Registration is now set to open next Wednesday August 6 at 6pm. See the following from the organizers:
Cape to Cabot has been forced to suspend online registration temporarily as the high volume of registration attempts has overwhelmed our web site provider. Last year we sold out in six hours, but we did not anticipate the very high, intense demand this year, to the extent that it would challenge our web site capacity. Over the weekend we will be working on a solution to allow registration to reopen. As of now, we anticipate reopening registration at 6 PM on Wednesday, August 6th. Please continue to check the capetocabot.com site for updates.
